U.S. Office of Personnel Management Site (OPM). Excellent resource for agency managers who need references to justify support for a smoking cessation programs. Has a link that specifically refers to the value of programs that offer nicotine patches and gum.

(informative quiz from NIH on older smokers and quitting)

Most of the smokers who have signed up for FOH smoking cessation programs are in the 40 – 60 year old age range. If you find a smoker in this age range who is sitting on the fence about quitting, suggest they take this quiz that demonstrates that older smokers are quite successful at quitting and have a lot to gain by quitting in spite of long smoking histories.

Call your state public health office and check on available free handouts.

State Resources

  • Be sure to check with your state departments of health. Tobacco settlement money usage varies from state to state. Washington State, for example, has allocated money for free phone counseling for smokers. Your state may have some great resources that are under utilized. Check with them every few months.
